AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

TRUE FIRST ORIGINAL PRINTING OF THIS WONDERFUL BOOK by the famous East-German photographers UTE AND WERNER MAHLER (there was also a second printing) -
in BRANDNEW CONDITION.

Ute and Werner Mahler are famous for many great photobooks, like "Monalisen der Vorstädte"("Mona Lisas of the Suburbs").

New, mint, unread - COLLECTOR'S COPY.

THIS IS THE VERY FIRST PHOTOBOOK AUCTION ON CATAWIKI - dedicated entirely to the world of the former "DDR"/"GDR" ("GERMAN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC" or "EAST GERMANY") which existed from 1949 to 1990.

Still largely undiscovered and unexplored, this field offers a wealth of fascinating discoveries for collectors.
5Uhr30.com presents exceptional works by renowned and emerging artists, survey works, compelling monographs, as well as extraordinarily rare small vintage catalogues, vintage children’s books and vintage factory photobooks; signed publications, posters, and much more.

"An empty square in a small town: almost devoid of people, and those who are there are either very old or very young. There are no sights to see, only empty storefronts, slow decay, and—if you’re lucky—a touch of morbid charm. It is the kind of place that you only come to by chance, and you are compelled to ask yourself: Who is here when I am not here—and why?
According to the definition of the Imperial Office of Statistics in 1887, which is valid in Germany to this day, a small town (Kleinstadt in German) has between five and twenty thousand inhabitants. Ute and Werner Mahler chose to investigate the demographic phenomenon of small towns in their fourth collaboration following Monalisen der Vorstädte (Mona Lisas of the Suburbs), completed in 2010; Wo die Welt zu Ende war (Where the World Ended), completed in 2012; and seltsame Tage (Strange Days), completed in 2014. Starting in 2012 they traveled around Germany in a small car with a large camera and a supply of black-and-white sheet film in search of images that document the atmosphere, attitude, and spirit of these places.
Their concise images freeze time and place, capturing the idea of a small town in a kaleidoscope of images from many small cities, ranging from Bad Gandersheim to Lebach and Zörbig. The future of such small towns will be decided in the next few years. Young people are the future; if they leave, small towns will die."

Wonderful photobook by Ute and Werner Mahler in the scarce first printing - in perfect condition.

"Ute Mahler, born 1949, and Werner Mahler, born 1950, together since 40 years, were among the foremost photographers in East Germany during the Communist era and continue today to bring their humanistic view of the world to bear on various compelling photo projects. Following reunification, they co-founded the photographers` agency `Ostkreuz` and the Ostkreuzschule school for photography in Berlin. The Mahlers live and work in Hamburg and Berlin. Ute Mahler is a professor of photography at the HAW University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg. Their first joint exhibition features important series such as Berka, Die Abiturienten, Bergbau, and Der Verein by Werner Mahler and Zusammen Leben, Erotikprogramm in der DDR, Brüder und Schwestern, Bomber, and Ibrahim Böhme by Ute Mahler. Also on view are fashion shots by both Ute and Werner Mahler - for example, for the legendary magazine Sibylle. With Monalisen der Vorstädte (Mona Lisas of the Suburbs), portraits of young women in five European cities, the two photographers are now presenting their first joint project."
