Bambù e uccelli by a Chinese School (XX) from the 20th century, unsigned, ink and natural pigment on rice paper in mixed media and tempera, 63 × 48 cm (without frame), sold with an antique gilded frame; restoration needed.
Description from the seller
Technique: ink and natural pigments on rice paper.
Measurements: 63 × 48 cm (without frame)
Antique gold cornice with glass.
Refined oriental painting created on traditional rice paper, depicting two birds with long red beaks moving among bamboo branches, one of the most symbolic subjects in Chinese painting. The work is executed with Chinese ink and natural pigments, applied with fluid and swift brushstrokes typical of southern Chinese brush painting.
The composition alternates areas of great lightness (the thin bamboo leaves) with more pronounced contrasts (the black silhouette of the birds), creating a harmonious and dynamic scene. In the upper left part, there are inscriptions in Chinese characters, probably a dedication or a signature with a date, a common element in works on paper intended as gifts or for domestic use.
The rice paper, very ancient and fragile, features:
folds, crackle, and signs of time
Some stains and abrasions.
Small consolidated lacerations.
All elements consistent with the period and nature of the support, which add character and authenticity to the work. The gilded frame shows signs of age.
Old European-style cornice, gold leafed, in good overall condition with signs of age. The piece is protected by glass.
Bamboo in Chinese tradition is a symbol of resilience, integrity, and longevity, while birds represent harmony and good fortune. This type of painting was often created as a gift of good wishes.
