Latin Breviarium Parisiense (Concilii Tridentini), published in Paris in 1653 under Ioannes Franciscus De Gondy, bound in leather with red and black typography, 11 x 7 cm, 678 pages, contains three original engravings and tipped-in plates, in first edition format from S. & G. Cramoisy.
Description from the seller
DESCRIPTION: I present to you a magnificent Parisian breviary from 1653, printed in accordance with the provisions of the Council of Trent, under the authority of Jean-François de Gondi, Archbishop of Paris and a key figure in the French liturgical reform.
Printed in red and black, with excellent typographic quality and careful composition, characteristic of the great Parisian liturgical editions of the Baroque period. The cover, in two colors, features a notable episcopal heraldic engraving, accompanied by a clear mention of the Tridentine Council and the royal privilege, emphasizing its official nature.
The volume contains three original copperplate engravings, notable for their expressive power and good preservation, including a superb depiction of the Ascension of the Lord, spanning a full page. The engravings stand out for their detailed line work and their balanced integration within the overall book.
Latin text, arranged in two columns, with abundant decorated initials and rubrics in red. The printing maintains great clarity, with liturgical use of color to hierarchize the content.
Antique leather binding, with raised bands and gilt tooling on the spine, and a manuscript label inscribed 'BREVIAR,' solid and appropriate for the period. Overall good condition of the volume, with the patina typical of a 17th-century liturgical book.
A work of great historical and bibliographic interest, representative of post-Tridentine liturgical standardization in France, and a highly valued piece in collections of ancient religious books, Church history, and Parisian Baroque typography.
