・Byōbu folding screen - Seasonal Beauties and Birds - Japan - Meiji period (1868-1912) Lot. 99712968

【Product details】

This elegant two-panel folding screen dates to the Edo period and depicts a classic scene inspired by The Tale of Genji or related Heian court literature. Hand painted in the refined Tosa school style, it portrays aristocratic women within a palace setting, capturing the graceful aesthetics of yamato-e painting.

The right panel shows three court ladies dressed in layered robes, seated on a veranda with green tatami mats, surrounded by patterned curtains that create an intimate atmosphere. The left panel depicts another noblewoman standing on a corridor extending over a garden pond, holding a lacquered tray. The composition is richly expressed with gold clouds, deep blue waters, and the soft green tones of pines and moss. The pine tree, a traditional symbol of longevity, steadfastness and endurance, underscores the enduring elegance of the scene.

The fittings on the frame are decorated with finely engraved floral arabesques, adding a further touch of sophistication.

This is an antique piece and shows signs of age throughout. The painted surface displays cracks in the paper, areas of flaking pigment, stains and general wear. The reverse, covered with decorative patterned paper, has notable tears, losses, stains and signs of old repair. The red-lacquered wooden frame shows visible wear including chips, flakes and rubbed lacquer, especially around the edges. The paper hinges are worn, though the panels remain connected. Please examine the photos carefully for details of the condition.
