Between 1924 and 1927, she performed as an actress with Jan Musch's company at the Grand Théâtre in Amsterdam and with the Stapperrevue. She also appeared in Cyrano de Bergerac and Peer Gynt.
She created fashion drawings for De Telegraaf in 1929, and later contributed poems and drawings to the children's section. One of her best-known (and controversial) books is "Het Groote Negerboek" (The Big Negro Book), published by Van Holkema & Warendorf around 1932; Schermelé drew dozens of illustrations for it.
Before 1940, she drew comics for the 'Geïllustreerd Stuiversblad' (Illustrated Penny Magazine). These included The Adventures of Bartje and Zwartje (1931), Kwik the Tomcat (1932), Jaap and his Monkey (1932), The Adventures of Kees and Kikkie (1934), and The Three of Us (1936).
Around 1950, a four-part series was published by the Kempische Boekhandel in Turnhout, featuring text and illustrations by Schermelé, including Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, Tom Thumb, and Snow White. In 1957, she began the Winkie series for Mulder & Zoon, which ran to twelve volumes. Afterward, she primarily illustrated children's books and designed postcards based on fairy tales. She also designed book covers.
Schermelé was married to children's book writer Henri Taal (1887-1960)
