The Sauvignon Blanc from the Ried Trinkaus is an absolute icon from the Sattler house, which is known and celebrated for its monumental reserve wines anyway. Trinkaus is, undisputedly, not only one of the best Sauvignon Blancs in Austria, but also definitely one of the best white wines in the country. It comes from the best plot of the Kranachberg, located at the top of about 500 metres on the hill ridge. A curved, open south slope like an amphitheatre and basically a fairly warm location, due to the air circulation from the Kranachtal but also with rapid cooling at night. The quartz-containing soil is sparse, but rich in minerals and allows very intense, fully ripe grapes to mature on the old vines. In the nose, the Kranachberg is initially very restrained in its youth, but then gradually reveals more and more of its potential with air. Wet stones like after a summer rain, then fine smoky and discreetly reductive, finally then a very clear, brilliant yellow fruit emerges. Ripe grapefruit, yellow apple, apricot, white currant and freshly sliced pear. Very calm, unexcited fruit and only a little exoticism of yellow kiwi, no gooseberry. A little lemongrass and tobacco spice to it. Great complexity and above all a remarkable balance, as the big 2019 had. Here in the 21st, however, everything is now a bit finer. In the mouth you are then surprised by the eerily gripping, grippy structure. Wow, what a minerality that makes for a crazy game here. Calid-salty hints with juicy citrus fruit. Ripe lemon, again apricot, slightly tart notes. Nutty components are also shown. Greenish walnut, pomelo, cassis and a present herbal spice. More fresh garden herbs than Mediterranean. The acid structure is ground but quite present, looks fresh, not sharp at all. What a great length! A fine tanning trip sticks to the edges of the tongue, plus the juicy citrus fruit that echoes again and again. A Sauvignon Blanc with its own character, this is not a copy of great Loire wines, but clearly Styria. Definitely very big material with immense potential.
