【Product details】

This elegant lacquer tea caddy (natsume) was crafted by the Kaga maki-e master Yamazaki Geishū. The piece is decorated with delicate autumn grasses on a black lacquer ground, including bellflowers, pampas grass, thoroughwort, patrinia, and bush clover. The thoroughwort flowers are further enhanced with a shimmering nashiji (pear-skin) ground, adding depth and brilliance to the composition.

Each of these autumn plants carries symbolic meaning in Japanese culture. The bellflower represents sincerity and steadfast love, while pampas grass is linked to autumn harvests and resilience. Thoroughwort signifies remembrance and elegance, patrinia is associated with feminine beauty, and bush clover conveys steadfastness and perseverance. Together, these motifs embody the refinement and seasonal awareness central to the Japanese tea ceremony.

The inside and base are finished in silver ground, providing a striking contrast to the exterior design.

Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to produce intricate designs. Nashiji employs a similar method, using gold or silver flecks to achieve a pear skin-like texture, offering a unique shimmer and depth to the surface.

Yamazaki Geishū is a recognised traditional craftsman, certified by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. His career achievements include the Ishikawa Governor’s Prize at the Sōsaku Maki-e Exhibition in 1978 and 1984, and selection for the 7th Japan Traditional Lacquerware Exhibition.

The piece comes with its original wooden box signed and sealed by the artist. Good used condition with only minor blemishes from age. Please refer to the photos for details.
