Description from the seller
Luxury edition 'Gelderland' (1926) – 810 pages – Complete – Richly illustrated – With subscriber list
Gelderland
N.V. Van Loghum Slaterus, Arnhem, 1926.
810 pages. Richly illustrated, with hundreds of historical photos, maps, floor plans, engravings, and prints.
Beautiful original linen band with gold stamp and blind embossing in Art Deco style.
Excellent condition: clean, sturdy, complete, and without stains.
A monumental provincial publication (rare in this condition)
This impressive volume was published in 1926 at the initiative of the Provincial Gelderland Association for Tourism and is known as one of the most beautiful and comprehensive historical publications on Gelderland from the Interwar period.
The luxury edition — gold embossing, high-quality linen, and hundreds of illustrations — made this a prestige project that was exclusively distributed through subscription.
The item offered here is in remarkably good condition, especially considering its size and age.
Content-rich: history, culture, topography, governance, and industry.
The work covers almost every aspect of the province in the early 20th century, including:
the Provincial Government and the King's Commissioner
castles, country estates, and old fortress towns
cities and towns, with much attention to Arnhem, Nijmegen, Zutphen, Tiel, and others.
Historical maps, including river courses, fortress plans, and area development.
Old engravings by Spilman, De Beijer, and other classical draftsmen.
industry on the rise, such as the Gazelle bicycle factory in Dieren
Sports and culture, including a portrait of Just Göbel (Vitesse and the Dutch national team).
Numerous photos of buildings, landscapes, museums, churches, collections, and people.
In-depth articles by various specialists and professors.
This makes the book not only historically interesting but also particularly appealing to enthusiasts of Gelderland topography, regional history, heraldry, and vintage images.
Special component: the extensive list of signatories
One of the characteristic elements of this publication is the subscription list, which neatly lists all original subscribers—including notable figures, institutions, companies, and individuals.
This adds extra provenance value to the work and makes it attractive to genealogists and regional researchers.
Condition
The book is in excellent condition, especially for an almost 100-year-old binding of this size.
no moisture stains
no loose pages
neatly and beautifully bound
clear print
Gold embossing beautifully present
Complete with all illustrations and maps.
A better specimen rarely comes on the market.
Summary
A luxurious, monumental, and comprehensive standard work on Gelderland, richly produced and highly suitable for collectors, historians, libraries, and enthusiasts of regional history.
A magnificent publication that surpasses most provincial books of that time both in content and visually.
