Well-preserved copy in a period binding of full ivory vellum, with a smooth spine decorated with the handwritten title. Nice typographic ornaments (headbands, initials, and engraved tailpieces).
In good condition. Slightly shaded spine, a stain on the first page. Strong binding. Very lightly yellowed paper, clean and fresh interior overall, well preserved, rare foxing. Good copy.
Provenance: Ex-libris of F. Franciscus Martin, 'Doctor Theologus Parisensis,' acquired. It bears a pasted label and a handwritten inscription on the pastedown.
Jean Papire Masson, or Papire Masson, born on May 6, 1544, in Saint-Germain-Laval and died on January 5, 1611, in Caen, was a French writer, historian, geographer, biographer, critic, and lawyer. Jean-Pierre Niceron noted de Masson for his good humor, sincerity, and generosity, and it was likely these characteristics, maintained with his high-ranking friends, that led to his appointment as the principal employee of the Chancery and as a substitute for the Keeper of the Seals without having to purchase either privilege.
Jean Papire Masson
Jo. Papirius Massonius, second part of the eulogies: which encompasses the lives of illustrious emperors, kings, and dukes; added is the life of P. Massonius himself, on Jacobus Augustus Thuano. All these, both ancient and modern, from ... Joan. Balesdens.
In Paris, at Sebastian Hure's, 1638
In-12 (17.5 x 11.5 cm); 16 pages + 439 pages + 8 pages (index)
