A Set of Six Meshiwan Rice Bowls – TOSHITAKA KAWAI
A refined set of six “Chōmon” (Bird Motif) Meshiwan rice bowls by Toshitaka Kawai.
This lot presents a complete set of six Meshiwan (rice bowls) known as Chōmon Meshiwan, created by contemporary ceramic artist Toshitaka Kawai. He is the grandson of Kanjiro Kawai, an important figure in modern Japanese ceramics closely associated with the Mingei (Folk Craft) movement.
The set incorporates the family’s well-known Chōmon (bird motif), a design frequently used within the Kawai tradition. Each bowl shows a harmonious balance of form and decoration. The surface features a soft white glaze over an earthen clay body, accented with hand-applied motifs using Gos (cobalt-based pigment) and Saidei (colored clay slip).
These bowls express the spirit of the Mingei philosophy, valuing beauty in everyday functional objects. This complete set offers an opportunity to appreciate handcrafted work intended for daily use and created within a long-established artistic lineage.
