Description from the seller
DESCRIPTION: I present to you at auction this IMPRESSIVE complete work: "Recueil de Édits y Ordenanzas Reales" (Montalant, Paris, 1720), two gigantic volumes, true cornerstones of French law during the height of the absolute monarchy. A sought-after work, cited and revered by jurists, historians, and high-level collectors.
THE BINDING:
+ Spectacular period full leather binding, with incredibly decorated spines:
+ Six prominent ribs in each volume, robust, powerful, with a majestic presence.
+ Five finely worked gilt rosettes along the spine: a combination of palmettes, scrolls and stars in a distinctly French 18th-century style.
+ Original red label with the inscription “ORDONN. ROYAVX” in bright gold, absolutely captivating.
+ Gold that, despite the three centuries that have passed, still shine as if it had been applied to a noble library.
+ Overall, a back to fall in love with: dominant, regal, almost sculptural.
These volumes contain all the major royal ordinances that shaped French justice and social life from the 14th to the 18th centuries. It is, quite literally, the legislative DNA of the absolute monarchy.
Among the most striking points:
1. Ordinances of religious persecution
It includes the edicts on Protestantism: regulations, prohibitions, tensions, repressive measures… authentic documents that changed lives and provoked mass migrations. A living testament to the struggle between state and faith.
2. Laws of social and economic control
Regulations on trades, control of commerce, social discipline, criminal justice… texts that show without filters how a country functioned when the law emanated from the king “by the grace of God”.
3. Ordinances of FRANCE UNDER LOUIS XIV AND LOUIS XV
These include judicial, police, financial, and administrative reforms. Here, the process of centralizing real power is clearly visible, step by step, signature by signature.
4. Famous Great Ordinances
Ordinances of François I, Louis XII, Henri IV and other key kings, with their vision of public order, morality and authority.
5. Added Edict of 1719
The second volume usually includes an edict added later, rarely preserved in other copies: a documentary bonus that makes this lot an even more coveted piece.
