A lovely Biedermeyer portrait of a handsome young man with a blue waistcoat holding a book. This painting is a work of the celebrated Amsterdam artist, Willem Karel Frederik Travers 1826-1869 who died only 43 years young in the Netherlands in 1869. Willem Karel Frederik Travers is most famous for the 9 feet tall portrait of Abraham Lincoln ( 1809-1865) the 16th president of the USA that he painted. This portrait the widow of Lincoln, Mary Todd Lincoln faint when she first saw the portrait. The Lincoln portrait of Travers was exhibited in 1876 at the Centenial International Exhibition in Philadephia USA and was admired by 10 million viewers. This famous Travers portrait is currently exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC and is there on view till 31 December 2027. Travers was a member of the Royal Academy in Amsterdam since 1852. He was an expert in lifelike portraits that were very much sought after in the middle of the 19th century. This beautyfull portrait is carefully cleaned. It measures 71 x 59 cm. Oil on canvas, signed F. Travers. The name of the sitter is unknown. Canvas 71 x 59 cm. Including frame 80 x 68 cm. Perfect condition. On the ba k a protective board.
