#289 (06/1987) – Double issue 'The Hobgoblin Revealed!': the official identity of the Hobgoblin is finally revealed as Ned Leeds, while mercenary Jason Macendale takes over and becomes the new Hobgoblin. Features appearances by Kingpin, Betty Brant, Flash Thompson, and many others: a key issue in the saga.

#288 (05/1987) – Conclusion of the mega saga 'Gang War': Kingpin has returned to New York and is manipulating heroes and criminals to regain control of the city. Guest stars include Daredevil, Falcon, Black Cat, Punisher, Hammerhead, Hobgoblin, and other gangs in an explosive finale.

#287 (04/1987) – 'Gang War – Part 4': Spider-Man and Daredevil arrive at a direct confrontation over differing methods to fight Kingpin, while the gang war devastates the streets and the shadow of Hobgoblin looms larger. This issue is also significant for the development of the relationship between the two heroes.

#286 (03/1987) – “Gang War – Part 3: Thy Father’s Son!”: the criminal war becomes even more fierce, with Hobgoblin, Jack O’Lantern, and the Rosa at the center of the plot, and the Punisher ready to mete out summary justice. Spider-Man finds himself in the middle, forced to choose between uncomfortable alliances and innocent lives to save.
