La Bretagne (Allegorie), oil on canvas by Jean Jacques Baptiste Brunet (1913), period 1910–1920, France, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Oil on canvas. Original canvas. Signed and dated. Reduced version of a similar painting from 1908, which is preserved at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Quimper, measuring 247 x 177 cm, with inventory number 2013-0-39.
Impressive symbolist-inspired painting signed by the notable painter Jean Brunet, which constitutes a reduced version of the magnificent Breton nation allegory from 1908, currently housed in the Museum of Fine Arts in Quimper. A maiden with a resolute and dramatic expression kneels before the ocean to place a wreath of flowers in gratitude for the gifts received, and in remembrance of those who died at the whim of the wind and the waves of the vast Atlantic. The painting also serves as a vehicle for the composition of a theme dear to Breton fervor that Gauguin inspired in French art at the end of the 19th century, transforming the ancient Celtic kingdom into the great inspiration for an entire generation of European artists, as well as a starting point for depicting a powerful femininity with a decadent taste.
Jean Jacques Baptiste Brunet was a French painter whose work embodied the culmination of late 19th-century academic virtuosity. His early talent led him to study at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Poitiers, before moving to the art capital of the world in 1872 to become a selective disciple of monumental figures like Jean-Léon Gérôme and Gustave Boulanger. This masterful lineage bestowed upon him an unrivaled technical mastery, which Brunet displayed with distinction from 1876 at the influential Salon of the French Artists. His canvases, ranging from heartfelt rural scenes to complex religious and romantic compositions, not only demonstrated impeccable fidelity to drawing but also a rare ability to imbue his subjects with a sublime and narrative quality, securing his place as a master who extended the greatness of formal art into the dawn of the 20th century.
- Image dimensions without frame: 66 x 82 cm / 82 x 98 cm with a magnificent eclectic-inspired golden frame.
