Elegant 87-piece Choisy-le-Roi ceramic faience service from France, dating to circa 1850–1900, featuring a brown sepia transferware design with minor signs of age and some chipping.
Description from the seller
Elegant terracotta service from Choisy-le-Roi, made by the prestigious manufacturer H. Boulenger & Cie and precisely datable to the years 1880–1895, a period during which the French factory reached one of its highest quality levels. The service features a refined transferware monochrome decoration in sepia brown, typical of late 19th-century production: delicate flowering branches, meticulously shaded, alternate on the rim, creating a balanced composition with a strong naturalistic appeal. The edge is embellished with a continuous ornamental band, elaborated with small stylized motifs that add harmony and visual rhythm to the overall design.
On the back, the original HB&Cie – Service Choisy – Choisy-le-Roi mark is printed in black, which unreservedly certifies its authenticity and historical placement.
Composition:
- 40 flat plates 23.5 inches (2 plates have a crack, 1 plate is chipped)
- 18 bottom plates 23ø
- 12 small plates 21cm diameter (1 plate has a crack)
- 5 oval serving plates 40x28; 38x26 (with a small chip); 37.5x26; 34x24
4 small oval serving dishes 25x12
- 1 sauce dish 23x16
1 round serving plate, 26.5 cm in diameter (has a crack).
- 3 aluminum plates 20ø H 11; 23ø H 4; 23ø H 4
- 1 salad bowl 28ø (has a crack)
2 soup tureens
Manufacture – Choisy-le-Roi
Founded in 1804 and quickly becoming one of the most important French manufactories of the 19th century, Choisy-le-Roi distinguished itself for its excellent production of fine faience and for its skillful use of stamping techniques, which allowed for highly detailed decorations. The manufactory managed to combine elegance and precision, specializing in naturalistic and floral motifs highly appreciated by the bourgeoisie of the time. Throughout the 19th century, the brand solidified its reputation for excellence, becoming synonymous with refinement and quality—characteristics that make its services particularly sought after by collectors today.
Condition
The service is in excellent overall condition for its age. Slight signs of wear are present, including widespread microcracking and, in some elements, the typical darkening spots caused by the natural aging of the ancient earthenware. These common and age-appropriate defects do not compromise the aesthetic, the readability of the decoration, or the integrity of the pieces. Overall, it is a well-preserved and uniform service.
