Description from the seller

New edition, the first complete edition of this great classic on the History of America by the Scottish historian William Robertson, one of his most appreciated works. Published in 1777, it was translated by Suard in 1778. Revised and corrected, it is here augmented by books 9 and 10 on the history of the English colonies, published after the author's death, in 1796, by his son William Robertson, here translated for the first time by Abbé Morellet.

Illustrated with 4 beautiful folding maps engraved by Tardieu "Map of the Gulf of Mexico, Map of South America, Mexico and New Spain, the countries of the South Sea from Panama to Guayaquit) and a plate "chronological table of Mexicans".

This story is as much about Columbus as it is about Cortes, Pizarro, and the description of America and its inhabitants in the 18th century.
Considered a classic of Enlightenment literature about America, it is also the archetype of a certain way of thinking of the time.
