Description from the seller

Very beautiful illustrated edition of this Atlas by Frederik Ludvig Norden, a Danish explorer of the 18th century, adorned with 23 engraved plates by Tardieu the elder, including a folding map depicting the landscapes, monuments, and emblematic cities of Egypt and Nubia.

We find the Nile, Alexandria, Aboukir, Cairo, Rosetta, Giza, Memphis, Mokias, Rodda, Memnon, as well as views of the pyramids and plans of ancient ruins.

Finely executed engravings and valuable visual documentation on ancient civilizations and major archaeological sites, demonstrating the growing European interest in the Orient during the Enlightenment.

Kept in a charming cherry half-leather binding, with a smooth spine decorated with gold fillets and the title. A good example, well preserved overall. Some rubbing on the covers, edges, and pierced corners; interior in good condition, with a few pinpricks along the margins of the engravings.

Frederic Louis Norden (Danish: Frederik Ludvig Norden) was a Danish sailor and traveler born on October 22, 1708, in Glückstadt and died on September 22, 1742, in Paris. He is the author of one of the earliest travel accounts in Egypt, a half-century before the Napoleonic expedition.

Frédéric Louis Norden / Tardieu the elder
Portable Library of Travels, Volume XIII, Atlas of Norden
Paris, Veuve Lepetit 1817
In-12 oblong (18x13cm); 23pp
