Description from the seller
An original work by Ellen de Tombay (1918-1998) is offered, a distinguished Swiss-Belgian painter whose career developed across Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, and Spain. Trained at the Académie de Liège, where she studied with masters such as Auguste Mambour and Jacques Ochs, and later expanding her studies in Rome, de Tombay developed a highly personal style within portraiture and the female figure. Her painting combines elegance, expressiveness, and a vibrant brushstroke that captures the psychology and character of her models with great sensitivity.
Throughout her life, she maintained an active exhibition and teaching career, and for decades she was connected to the Costa Blanca, especially Alfaz del Pi (Alicante), where she created a very vibrant artistic environment and left a strong mark on local collectors and painters.
The work presented — originating precisely from the artistic and collector circle linked to Ellen de Tombay herself in Alfaz del Pi — shows a magnificent female portrait, executed with the looseness, vibrant colors, and gestural freshness characteristic of her hand. The figure appears seated, holding a small mirror or card, in an intimate gesture that reflects flirtation, introspection, and naturalness. The energetic brushwork, touches of color, and expressive focus on the face directly recall the most recognized style of the artist.
The piece is framed, measuring a total of 87 × 75 cm, and is in very good condition, ready for exhibition.
This is a work of great interest within Ellen de Tombay's figurative production, particularly attractive to collectors of 20th-century female portraiture and European painting with Mediterranean sensitivity.
