Description from the seller
Attributed to Alfred Gobert (Paris, 1822 – La Garenne-Colombes, 1894)
Framed artwork
Provenance: French private collection, with a family label on the back.
Delicate allegorical gouache depicting a putto surrounded by floating fabrics and white birds, in an oval composition with notable dynamism. The figure, rendered with an agile drawing and soft modeling, is integrated into a luminous atmosphere of ochre and gold tones, where fluid brushwork and touches of light suggest a full mastery of decorative technique.
The work is rooted in the tradition of 19th-century French academic art, linked to the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, an institution where Alfred Gobert developed his career as an enameler master and artistic director. His style combines rococo elegance with the symbolic sensitivity of decorative art from the Third Republic, reflecting the transition between classical ornamentation and the refined taste characteristic of the end of the century.
The old mounting, along with the family provenance label on the back, reinforces the historical and documentary interest of the piece, which is representative of French applied art of its time and of the preparatory production associated with national manufactories.
