A pair of 18th/19th‑century Japanese wa‑abumi stirrups in reddish‑gold nashiji finish with red lacquered edges, karakusa pattern and raden inlay, each 25.5 cm high, 29 cm long and 11.5 cm deep, total weight 3,930 g, iron with lacquer, in excellent condition and supplied with a certificate of authenticity.
Description from the seller
An antique pair of lacquered iron abumi 鐙 (stirrups).
This pair is of the typical wa-abumi 鰐鐙 (“swan-shaped”) form, finished in reddish-gold nashiji 梨子地 (sprinkled gold lacquer) and bordered with vibrant red lacquered edges. The sides are decorated with a karakusa 唐草 (scrolling foliage) pattern that begins in nashiji and transitions into speckled raden 螺鈿 (mother-of-pearl) inlay. The tops feature an openwork splashing-wave design.
Period: Japan – Second half Edo period (18th century / first half 19th century)
Dimensions (each):
Height 25.5 cm, Length 29 cm, Depth 11.5 cm
Total weight: 3,930 g (pair)
In good condition commensurate with age. The lacquer shows natural age cracks and small losses, with minor nicks, light scratches, and some tiny raden losses expected from stirrups of this period. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
Abumi were essential riding equipment for the samurai class. Their distinct swan-like profile provided stability during mounted combat and differs notably from the stirrups used in other cultures. Their use continued until European-style tack was adopted in the late 19th century.
When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity.
