ABOUT THE ARTIST
Isabel Lleo Castells is a multidisciplinary Spanish artist whose career spans painting, sculpture, film, printmaking, and digital media. She began her education at the German School in Madrid (1980) and pursued Fine Arts at the San Fernando University in Madrid, later continuing her studies at the Academies of Fine Arts in Munich and Hamburg between 1984 and 1991. Throughout her formative years, she trained with influential international artists such as Hermann Nitsch, Joseph Beuys, Nam June Paik, Helke Sander, Eu Nim Ro, and others, shaping a practice rooted in experimentation and cross-media expression. Lleo later expanded her skills through specialized programs, including graphic design, a Master in Image Synthesis and Computer Animation (MAISCA, 1995), workshops at Fundació Miró, and a degree in Clinical Psychology (2010).
Her work has been recognized with several awards, including distinctions from the Hamburg Ministry of Culture, Otto Versand, the Spanish Ministry of Culture, and the Balearic Government. She has received commissions for public sculpture and institutional support for major international exhibitions, including Sculpture by the Sea and the Venice Biennale.
Lleo has exhibited widely across Europe, Mexico, and Australia. Her group exhibitions include Oslo Art Fair, Sculpture Network events at the Guggenheim Bilbao, residencies at Palmyra Sculpture Centre, and recurring participation in FIG International Print Fairs in Bilbao. She has been featured several times in Sculpture by the Sea (Bondi and Cottesloe), as well as in projects in Rome, London, Porto, Marbella, and major venues in Mallorca.
Her solo exhibitions span galleries and cultural institutions in Hamburg, Poland, Switzerland, Tarragona, Mallorca, and Madrid, including Real Academia de Bellas Artes San Fernando and Fundación Carlos de Amberes.
Lleo’s works form part of notable collections such as Es Baluard Contemporary Art Museum in Palma, Fundación Alfaz del Pí, Fundación Mathias Kühn, and major German public and private collections.
