Henning Wagenbreth's illustrations, considered among the most interesting and original of any European artist, are a style to follow. The bright, often fluorescent colors, along with precise lines and angles, create highly impactful drawings. His carefully curated publications have made him one of the leading figures in the forefront of comic art in Germany.
Just like Atak, Anke Feuchtenberger, Holger Fickelscherer, and many others, it was upon coming into contact with 'RAW', Art Spiegelman's magazine, that they approached comics. Artists of the caliber of Mark Beyer, Rory Hayes, Jeunet, and Caro, who began drawing within the punk movement, received a great influence from Wagenbreth. His strength lies in his ability to fuse underground expressionism with Eastern European illustration, Frans Maseree's woodcuts, and digital graphics.
Wagenbreth is capable of discussing contemporary society with a critical eye and developing these ideas with exceptional creativity. As in the book "Cry For Help," where the phenomenon of digital crime and spam illustrate one of the biggest clichés of Western mentality. Among his works are "Der Polarforscher" (1995), an illustrated collection of stories by T. C. Boyle; "Das Geheimnis der Insel St. Helena" (2002), fantastic stories about Napoleon's death; and "Mond und Morgenstern" (1999), considered the "most beautiful book in the world."
For the festival, the author will create a silkscreen print using a historic printer from Sweden.
