Description from the seller
San Giuseppe with the Child by Benedetto Luti (Florence, 1666 – Rome, 1724), oil on canvas, 67 × 87 cm (without frame)
Benedetto Luti represents one of the central figures of Italian painting between the 17th and 18th centuries, an ideal bridge between Carlo Maratti's Baroque classicism and Pompeo Batoni's Rococo grace. His art embodies the pursuit of harmony, measure, and spirituality, and is today housed in some of the most prestigious international museum institutions, including the Uffizi, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica.
The proposed painting, inspired by the renowned model of Guido Reni, offers an extraordinarily intense interpretation of the theme of fatherhood, and this canvas represents an excellent example of Luti's ability to combine classical composition with human emotion, providing the audience with an emotional and visual experience of rare refinement.
It is plausible that this is the first of the two specimens created by the artist on this subject; the other is now housed at the Museo di Casa Martelli in Florence, documented as having been purchased directly from Luti in 1721. On the back of the painting, there is an inscription reading 'S.M. Card: Valenti' along with an inventory number (h: 729), which reinforces the historical authenticity and provenance of the work.
Based on the artistic quality and rarity on the market, I believe that this painting could constitute a highly interesting acquisition, capable of attracting collectors and scholars.
