Shiro studied arts at Kaburagi Kiyokata. He designed his first woodblock print designs for Watanabe Shozaburo in 1919, after the publisher had seen his work at an exhibition. Shiro designed shin-hanga prints for Watanabe for a long period, and gained fame with his romantic landscapes and depictions of traditional Japanese life. Between 1952 and 1960, he also created over 100 woodblock print designs for the Kyoto publisher Unsodo. Shiro is generally regarded as one of the top shin-hanga woodblock print artists in Japan.

Charming winter scene of the Godaido Temple on one of the islands in Matsushima, a group of hundreds of small islands, all covered in pine trees. The temple, the surrounding pine trees, and the boats in the foreground are all covered in a thick layer of snow. The air is filled with a pink light as the sun sets, tinting the clouds orange. Multiple islands can be seen on the horizon. An intriguing design with fine bokashi shading.

The woodblock print is in excellent condition and has never been framed before.
