Rare edition of these periodical letters of natural history, published from 1768 to 1781 under the direction of the great compiler Pierre-Joseph Buc'hoz (1731-1807).
Five volumes including: three tomes with many interesting discoveries concerning the medicinal properties of plants and instructions on agriculture, followed by the last two volumes dedicated to anecdotes about animal knowledge.
Bound in the Bradel style, with charming orange cardboard covers, smooth spines adorned with a laid-on title piece, gilded initials, and sprinkled edges.
Good copy, well preserved. Marks on the covers and spine are worn, headbands frayed and soft. Interior in good condition, paper very slightly yellowed, rare foxing.
Pierre-Joseph Buc'hoz, born in Metz on January 27, 1731, and died in Paris on January 30, 1807, was a lawyer, doctor, and compiler of the eighteenth century. He is best known for his numerous publications in the field of botany, which were highly controversial in their time. He first published a History of the Plants of Lorraine in 1762. He also had small books on medicine printed. He published a Natural History of France (14 volumes, in-8°), and a Universal History of the Plant Kingdom (1773 and onwards), based on Linnaeus's nomenclature, but it was unfinished.
