Description from the seller

Tesauro Emanuele. The Virgin Triumphing and the Capricorn Scorned. Venice at Gio: Giacomo Hertz, 1680. A rare and significant polemical work by the Piedmontese historian and literary figure, responding to criticisms from some of his detractors. The controversy revolves around the true influence of Emperor Augustus, a subject of debate among historians and astrologers dealing with ancient books, ephemerides, and astrolabes. The work is divided into several sections: the first and largest mainly concerns judicial astrology, especially the predictions for the birth of Prince Tommaso, whom Tesauro supported. It is followed by the Lamproione addressed to the Academician, and finally the Apology against Dr. Capriata’s Examination and the Reflections of Hieronimo Crema. Full leather binding from the period. Calligraphic title on the spine. Printer’s mark on the frontispiece. Portrait of the author in the dedication. Woodcut tailpieces and initials. Dimensions 15x8 cm, 32 pages plus 492. Excellent condition.
