Description from the seller
A rare and highly collectible lot of two signed first editions by two leading figures of modern Greek letters: Grigorios Xenopoulos and Giorgos Theotokas. Both copies are hand-signed and dedicated by their authors — exceptional provenance for collectors of Greek literature, autographs, and 20th-century Hellenic publishing.
1) Γρηγόριος Ξενόπουλος — Ο Κατήφορος (The Descent)
Publisher: I. D. Kollaros, Athens
Year: 1928
Edition: First Edition
Signed: Hand-signed and dedicated by Grigorios Xenopoulos
Pages: 437
Size: 17.5 cm × 11.5 cm
Binding / Condition: Original hard binding; good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear.
Notes: Grigorios Xenopoulos (1867–1951) is one of modern Greece’s most important novelists and editors. A signed first edition of a major 1920s novel is a rare find and highly desirable to specialists.
2) Γιώργος Θεοτοκάς — Αλκιβιάδης (Alcibiades)
Publisher: Estia, Athens
Year: 1959
Edition: First Edition
Signed: Hand-signed and dedicated by Giorgos Theotokas
Pages: 107
Size: 20.5 cm × 14 cm
Binding / Condition: Original softcover; good vintage condition with minor signs of age.
Notes: Giorgos Theotokas (1905–1966), a central member of the Generation of the ’30s, is highly regarded for his novels and theatrical work. Signed first editions by Theotokas are prized by collectors of modern Greek literature.
Collectors’ Importance
Signed first editions by either author are scarce; having two together makes this lot particularly valuable.
Ideal for collectors of the Generation of the ’30s, Greek literary autographs, institutional libraries, or museums assembling modern Greek literary archives.
Both works are historically and literarily significant — representing different moments of Greek 20th-century prose.
Condition
Both volumes are in good vintage condition with typical age-related wear. Please review all photos carefully for a full assessment.
