Description from the seller
“Damask” (2025)
Oil on canvas
170 x 140 cm
The darkest red foundation VANTA has worked with yet - “Damask” pushes into near-black territory before the removal process begins. Once that uniform deep base was laid down, the artist had to work fast, wiping away wet paint in one continuous motion to create these flowing ribbons. The deeper the foundation color, the more dramatic the contrast when lighter tones are revealed beneath.
This piece required absolute confidence.
Represented by S-Gallery and available on Catawiki, the work shows no hesitation in its execution - each carved form flows seamlessly into the next, suggesting the entire composition was envisioned completely before the first tool touched wet paint. The nearly black-red ground makes every removal count, creating stark relief that gives the ribboning forms an almost sculptural presence.
Working this dark amplifies risk - any misstep would be immediately obvious against such a saturated field. The large format meant covering significant ground quickly while the paint remained workable. What emerges is a composition where light seems to emanate from the carved areas, as if the ribbons are glowing against the deep damask background.
Shipping:
The work is delivered without a frame (professional packaging, rolled in a tube). it can easily be restretched by a professional or on your own, this is also cheaper then the otherwise increased cost of shipping when sending paintings of this size stretched
The measurements indicated are those of the painting stretched and mounted on a frame (The actual
measurements of the canvas are larger to allow it to be mounted on a frame 2-4cm thick.
