Ensemble of two illustrated volumes of L'art des accouchemens by Jean-Louis Baudelocque, illustrated edition in half leather binding, published by Méquignon l’ainé between 1796 and 1807, in original French, comprising 496 and 582 pages with bindings in good condition.
Description from the seller
Rare illustrated collection of these foundational works of modern obstetrics, synthesizing practical and theoretical knowledge of childbirth at the end of the 18th century.
In both volumes, Baudelocque rigorously codifies the assistance techniques during childbirth, based on a scientific methodology and a structured pedagogy aimed at midwives and surgeons.
He introduces pelvic measurement using the compass that bears his name, allowing for the assessment of pelvic dimensions and the anticipation of complications related to childbirth.
He describes with extreme meticulousness 93 fetal positions, the maneuvers suitable for each, and the precise indications for the use of forceps, cesarean section, pubiotomy, and symphysiotomy, while rejecting certain practices deemed barbaric.
The work stands out for its concern with rationalizing medical intervention, reducing maternal and infant mortality, and making obstetrics an autonomous and scientific discipline.
Baudelocque also developed an educational program for midwives, based on clear principles, question-and-answer sessions, and technical illustrations, contributing to the professionalization of the art of childbirth.
His influence was such that Napoleon I appointed him as the obstetrician of Empress Marie-Louise, confirming his authority in the field.
This treatise, reprinted several times, marks a break with empirical traditions and paves the way for a obstetrics based on observation, anatomy, and clinical rigor.
Jean-Louis Baudelocque - The Art of Childbirth - 1796 / 1807 - Volumes I and II - Méquignon the Elder
496, 582 pages.
Good condition of the bindings, different binding, work in their brown half-calf edition, marbled boards, signs of wear and ink stain on the first board of volume II, damaged spines with slight losses, chips on the upper caps, wear on the hinges and corners, marbled edges, smooth ornated spines, gilded titles and volume numbers on morocco pieces.
Good interior condition, foxing and some water stains, works enriched with beautiful engravings outside the text on folding plates in intaglio, various ex-libris.
