Les dix journées de Jean Boccace, an illustrated edition edited by Paul Lacroix and illustrated by Flameng, in four volumes bound in brown half-leather by Librairie des Bibliophiles (1873).
Description from the seller
Charming illustrated collection of this luxurious edition of the Decameron, produced under the direction of Paul Lacroix, known as Bibliophile Jacob, and illustrated by Flameng.
This company is part of the 19th-century bibliophilic movement, which aimed to offer enthusiasts classic texts in elegant and scholarly formats.
The work follows the structure of the ten days during which, in a villa outside Florence struck by the plague, ten young people tell each other one hundred stories blending tales of love, adventure, cunning, and fortune.
Lacroix's editorial work highlights the literary and historical richness of the text, accompanied by learned notes and a critical apparatus designed to illuminate the cultural and social references of the 14th century.
Flameng's illustrations add a visual dimension that transposes the narrative universe into a romantic and historicist aesthetic, enhancing the edition's appeal to collectors.
The whole reflects the French reception of the Decameron as a masterpiece of Italian prose, while embodying the spirit of the 19th-century bibliophile, concerned with combining erudition, art, and the pleasure of reading.
