Description from the seller
Philidor, A.-D. (Danican, François-André). Analysis of Chess Play.
Paris / Strasbourg, Amand Koenig bookseller. 1812. Small octavo. 148 pages. Full Havana brown calf binding with a smooth spine and a red morocco title piece (period binding). Manuscript ex-libris on the title page and a curious colored engraving on the front pastedown.
41 diagram boards outside the main text, printed in black, red, and gold.
Second edition published by Koenig, the first appeared in 1803, with a print run of 500 copies. The binding is in poor condition with missing parts on the back, a cracked spine, and various scuffs (see photos). Some foxing.
Among the emblematic figures of the 18th century, François-André Danican Philidor holds a unique place, at the crossroads of the worlds of music and chess. Born in 1726 in France, where art and intellect experienced unprecedented growth, Philidor distinguished himself not only as a renowned opera composer, inheriting a long line of talented musicians, but also as one of the most innovative chess players of his time. His ability to excel in these two seemingly distinct fields demonstrates a depth and intellectual diversity that set him apart from his contemporaries.
François-André Danican Philidor left an indelible mark in the field of chess, not only through his openings and playing strategy but also through his significant contributions to the understanding of endgames. He revolutionized the way of approaching endgames with his analysis and methodology. He established principles that remain relevant and influential to this day.
Among Philidor's most notable contributions to endgames, his theory on rook endgames stands out particularly. He demonstrated effective methods for maneuvering in rook endgames with pawns. 'The Philidor position' and 'the Philidor defense' are the most well-known methods.
