Description from the seller
Superb illustrated collection of this erudite and historical work dedicated to the evolution of the Château de Versailles and its major figures, based on archival documents hitherto little exploited.
The collection, structured into several thematic sections — Trianon, The Creation of Versailles, Marie-Antoinette Dauphine, Queen Marie-Antoinette, Louis XV and Maris, Versailles, Art at Versailles, Madame de Pompadour and Politics, Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour, Versailles, Residence of Louis XIV — articulates the architectural, artistic, and political history of the estate.
De Nolhac, a curator and historian, highlights the genesis of the palace under Louis XIV, its role as a royal residence and center of power, the successive embellishments, and the influential female figures (Marie-Antoinette, Madame de Pompadour) who marked its destiny.
It illustrates the 19th century's desire to rehabilitate and document Versailles, by combining unpublished sources, critical analyses, and historical narration, and it contributes to the construction of a modern historiography of the monument.
