[David Martin] / Pieter Mortier - History of the New Testament, enriched with more than four hundred and many print engravings, cut in copper. With the privilege of the Lords States of Holland and West Friesland - Amsterdam, Pieter Mortier, Bookseller, 1700. - (22), 163, (12) pages + 72 leaves (= 144 pages) with 2 engravings on each page - folio, blind-stamped leather binding with gilded ornament, double gilded borders with motifs in the corners, and raised bands on the spine.
Good. Gouges and impact marks. Tear in the right knee above to the 3rd rib and below to the 2nd rib, a tear on the right in the third rib. Interior discoloration, with some spots here and there. Only minor blemishes. Tear approximately 8cm, at the bottom of the last page 'Voorreden'. At the bottom of pages 19/20, approximately 5cm. A bite out of the margin of 2 pages.
Engraved plates by J. Baptist, J. Mulder, and C. Huyberts after J. Goeree, O. Elliger & B. Picart.
Contains frontispiece, 144 engravings on 72 plates, and several tailpieces. Engravings/tailpieces are beautifully dark in print. With the 5 maps: including a world map, the paradise (tear at the bottom of the central fold, 1cm), the exodus of the children of Israel, the Holy Land - all engravings/maps are depicted.
This book is known as 'The Great Bible of Pieter Mortier.' The term 'Bible' is incorrect; it gives the impression that this is a Bible, but it is actually a picture Bible, featuring 144 biblical illustrations with brief descriptions. 'Great Bible of Mortier' (=Poortman II, pp. 98-105).
