Vhils presents Layers · No Reserve (2024), an original mixed media portrait from Portugal, 70 × 50 cm, hand-signed and numbered 1/1, featuring multicolour tones.
Description from the seller
This is a unique piece, signed and numbered 1/1.
This work adopts Vhils' traditional process of 'scratching the surface,' which involves removing the layers formed by a pile of posters laminated on the street to reveal each underlying layer. In doing so, he uncovers the different strata of history accumulated beneath the posters, like a contemporary archaeologist. A portrait also emerges against this poster background. By inscribing portraits, Vhils aims to bring humanity back to the heart of the city, restoring a place that seems to have been lost amidst unchecked urbanization.
LAYERS is NFT's first scalable project where collectors can co-create artworks on the Ethereum blockchain. The artworks will evolve over time according to individual preferences, with each collector free to 'tear' each 'layer' as they see fit, although there is a limit—three attempts. Some of the best pieces have been transformed into screenprints, like this one, but it is no longer possible to create more.
This particular piece evokes his experiments with billboards and light, creating a beautiful and unique work.
