Oshie / Okiage
Okiage is a type of oshie (pressed picture) in which a design is raised three-dimensionally using cloth or cotton. In Hakata, there was a custom of giving okiage to celebrate the birth of a girl. The appeal of Hakata okiage lies in the delicacy and richness of the hand-painted faces. Originally made by court ladies in the Edo period, it is said to have been popularized in Hakata by Senga, the wife of painter Murata Toho, who lived in what is now Susaki-cho, Hakata Ward, at the end of the Edo period. During the Meiji and Taisho periods, it was a part of the culture of Hakata women. Today, the method of making okiage is carried on by father and son, Shimizu.
