【Product details】

This Meiji period or later Japanese tobacco set consists of a wooden portable case (tabako-bon) with carrying handle, a pair of ceramic containers, and a kiseru pipe.

The wooden case features two small drawers, decorated in black lacquer with maki-e designs of a flying crane and ocean waves. Inside, the surface is finished with nashiji, a speckled pear-skin ground achieved by sprinkling gold flecks into lacquer. Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to produce intricate designs. Nashiji employs a similar method, using gold or silver flecks to achieve a pear skin-like texture, offering a unique shimmer and depth to the surface.

The crane is a symbol of longevity and good fortune, while waves represent the eternal and ever-flowing strength of nature. Together, they form a harmonious motif of prosperity and enduring life.

The set includes two ceramic pieces: a larger vessel used as a fire pot and a smaller one for ash disposal. Both show signs of use but no chips.

The kiseru pipe features a bamboo shaft finished in vermilion lacquer, with metal mouthpiece and bowl fittings showing tarnish. The mouthpiece is slightly loose, though it does not detach. The bamboo shaft has a few cracks from age.

Overall, the set shows some blemishes consistent with age. The tobacco case has surface wear, small chips and cracks to the lacquer, one lacquer surface repair, and patina on the metal fittings. The ceramics show use but remain intact. Fair antique condition. Please refer to the photos for details.
