【Product details】

This finely carved wooden carp sculpture was created in the Showa period by Yanagisawa Eiichi, a recognised master of Inami wood carving from Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture. It is entirely hand-carved, with bold chiselled lines that bring out the natural grain of the wood and emphasise the carp’s flowing form.

Yanagisawa Eiichi 柳沢英一 is a certified traditional craftsman of Inami carving, designated in 1975. He studied under Yokoyama Zensaku 横山善作 (also known as Ichimu 一夢) and is particularly renowned for his works of Tenjin statues. His career includes 13 selections at the prestigious Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition). A member of the Toyama Nichichōkai (Japan Sculpture Association in Toyama), Eiichi specialised in deep-relief carvings and shrine or temple commissions, as well as decorative panels, household transoms, and sculptural works.

The carp, or koi, has long symbolised perseverance, determination, and success in Japanese culture, as it is admired for its strength in swimming upstream. This makes the piece not only a fine example of Inami craftsmanship but also a meaningful symbol of resilience and achievement.

The sculpture is housed in its original wooden box, which bears the inscription “Carved Carp” (木彫鯉) on the lid and is signed and sealed by the artist Eiichi on the side.

Minor blemishes and signs of age are present, along with two small holes, but overall the work remains in good used condition. Please examine the photos carefully for details.

Dimensions: approx. H 10.5 cm W 36 cm D 7.5 cm
