The painting depicts a serene winter scene in the Flemish countryside, characteristic of the Waasland region. A snow-covered landscape stretches out beneath a heavy, grayish-blue cloud cover, emphasizing the cold stillness of winter days. In the center stands a simple, thatched shelter, partially covered in snow and frost. The roof appears both heavy and soft, as if it bears the winter burden with resignation.
A lively flock of chickens and a proud rooster gather in front of the hut. Their warm colors—white, brown, and the bright red of their combs—contrast beautifully with the cool tones of the snow and sky. They forage among the straw and the clearing in front of the hut, where the snow seems partially melted by their movement and the shelter.
In the background, blurred by distance and atmospheric perspective, a village can be seen, its church tower rising above the horizon. This gives the scene a sense of space and tranquility, as if everyday life is momentarily distanced while nature asserts its wintry stillness.
In this work, Hilaire Bals captures the simplicity and charm of rural life, even during the colder months. The combination of soft brushstrokes, subtle lighting, and realistic details creates a warm and nostalgic winter scene.
Hilaire Bals (born 1940) was a professional artist who began his artistic career as a student at the Academy of Sint-Niklaas, where his teachers included Marcel Mutsaerts and Raf Coorevits.
After this training, he focused on painting still lifes, animals, and paintings with a symbolist influence. Hilaire Bals's paintings can unmistakably be considered realistic. However, the intention is never to create a purely photographic representation; atmosphere and interpretation of reality play an important role. Consistently, against all trends, he upholds craftsmanship as a top priority. This perseverance results in paintings that testify to a love for beauty.
