Still life with flowers, fruit and birds, an 18th‑century oil painting on canvas from Italy, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Significant work by the Monogrammista A V (Giuseppe Pesci?) from the 18th century, painted in oil on canvas and in good preservation condition. The work measures 68 x 94 cm and is presented with the original canvas in an contemporary frame.
The 'Monogrammista AV' is an anonymous painter, mainly known for his still lifes, whose identity has long been debated. It has been hypothesized that he could be Giuseppe Pesci, active in Emilia in the early 18th century. The name derives from the initials 'AV' that appeared on a work. Another painter, Angelo Zani, has been suggested as a possible identity, as he signed works with the initials 'AZ' and shows stylistic similarities to the Monogrammista.
Who was the Monogrammista AV?
Uncertain identity: The figure of the Monogrammista AV has been the subject of debate for a long time.
Giuseppe Pesci: This is one of the most credible attributions for the Monogrammista AV, with works that identify him as a still life painter active in Emilia.
Angelo Zani: Another hypothesis, based on stylistic similarities, is that the Monogrammista AV could be Angelo Zani from Pisa.
Details about the work: His works have been sold at auction, including a Flemish still life that was sold in 2017 for a considerable amount.
You can notice in the attached photographs the volume Naturaliter edited by Gianluca and Ulisse Bocchi, top experts in Italy of Still Life, where various works by the Monogrammist A.V. are published.
Origin of the collection from a private Italian collection.
