Description from the seller
Very beautiful and antique glazed faience lantern, signed by Antoine Montagnon, founder of the Manufacture de Montagnon in Nevers, following the takeover of the factory from the end of the world in 1875.
Caricature character decor, here of peasant sowers, as was commonly done at the time, set against a multicolored background.
There are other settings with musicians, politicians, and notable figures...
Signed on the base with ink from the 'green knot,' emblem of the Manufacture de Montagnon in Nevers, as well as the intertwined initials AM for Antoine Montagnon, directly from the artist's hand.
This type of signatures makes the lantern very rare because it is from the first period of Antoine Montagnon, dating between 1875 and 1899. The graphics of the emblem of the Manufacture and Antoine's signature changed after 1900, as did the bases of the pieces, which were then enamelled in white instead of being left in raw earth.
So, this is not a reissue during the period of Gabriel or Gérard Montagnon, his sons.
The signature has been authenticated by the Museum of Faience and Fine Arts of Nevers.
Excellent condition: no cracks, no hairline fractures, no missing parts, no restorations.
The photos are an integral part of the description.
Dimensions approximately in cm:
Width 14 cm (including the handles)
Diameter of the base 9.5 cm
Height 17 cm
Weight approximately 400 grams
