Luxury edition published in the 'Marpon & Cie' collection of a novel by the Nice diplomat, essayist, historian, and literary critic Vicomte Eugène-Melchior de Vogüé (1848-1910), first published in 1896 in the 'Revue des deux mondes' and then in 1897 by Armand Colin.
One of the copies on Arches laid paper (no. 939), bound in a magnificent pyrography-decorated binding. Full marbled calf, the front cover illustrated with a pair of seagulls in flight within a frame of fillets. Ornate spine, title and author stamped in gold. Gilt head. Jaspé cardboard case.
Covers and spine preserved.
Black and white illustrations by A. Bouchet, engraved on wood by E. Gaspérini. Portrait of the author after Bonnat, in the frontispiece.
Condition: binding in excellent condition. Solid case. Impeccable interior. A choice copy.
The narrator, Nestor du Plantier, a 'mature diplomat' resembling the author's figure, recounts a love story, worthy of that of Tristan and Iseult, between Jean d'Agrève, a maritime aristocrat, and Hélène, a seductive beauty.
