Rare carved walnut figure of a Bishop, probably French, from the 15th century, in late Gothic style.
Description from the seller
Rare and impressive carved walnut figure of a Bishop, probably France, 15th century.
A powerful late-Gothic sculpture depicting a Bishop in full liturgical attire, characterized by the tall mitre, expressive facial features, and deeply carved drapery folds typical of French medieval craftsmanship. The figure retains traces of its original medieval polychromy, a highly desirable and evocative feature that highlights its long devotional history.
The piece shows extensive age-related worming and natural wear consistent with its great age. One forearm is lacking, exactly as described in the Christie’s catalogue. Despite this, the sculpture remains visually striking, with strong presence and remarkable historical authenticity.
Provenance: Important Belgian Private Collection.
