Original edition, illustrated with 481 wood engravings drawn by Chavignard, Pauquet, and Sellier based on authentic documents.
Set in a beautiful antique binding made of half brown Morocco leather, with gold fillets along the covers and corners, a spine with raised bands highlighted by gold fillets, and a gilt top.
Refined impression on fine vellum paper.
Overall in good condition. Solid binding showing signs of wear and scuffs on the leather, scratches on the covers, wear at the edges, corners, and headbands. Interior fresh and clean, rare in this condition, free of foxing or very rare.

The author Jules Quicherat (1814-1882) was a French historian and archaeologist. A student of the École royale des chartes, from which he graduated as a palaeographic archivist in 1834, and later attached to the Royal Library.
In 1847, he was appointed archaeology instructor, and then, in 1849, professor of diplomatics at the École des chartes, which he directed from 1871 until his death.
