A first edition, two volume set of John Martineau's 'The Life and Correspondence of Sir Bartle Frere,.....', published in London, 1895. A good and complete copy. Volume one detailing Frere's early childhood and his time spent in the civil service in India. Volume two covering Frere's period as Governor of the Cape Colony; his successful attempt to halt the Zanzibar slave trade and his decision to wage war on the Zulus.

8vo, two volumes uniformly bound in publishers burgundy cloth gilt, both upper boards with gilt crests, all page edges untrimmed and numerous upper page edges unopened. Original patterned endpapers.

The contents of both volumes are complete, meeting collation: vii, [3], 516; vii, [1], 469, [1]pp, including halftitles and indexes, with all portraits, maps and illustrations present as called for on lists.

Condition: The bindings are holding firmly and in good to very good condition, light rubbing and marking to surfaces, extremities and corners bumped and lightly abraded, spines lightly sunned, short split at head of upper hinge vol one, some scuffing and bumping to lower board of the same volume. Contents are holding firmly and in good condition, lightly toned with occasional minor foxing at points, heavier to endpapers and adjacent leaves, fe's browned, small splits to upper endpaper joint volume one. Numerous upper page edges unopened and dustmarked, foredges foxed. Notable dustmarked crease at head of leaves from pp264-281 in volume one. No inscriptions or labels.
