Description from the seller
The Stranger, by Albert Camus
Original lithographs by Mireille Berrard
Complete collated set of the two color suites of the lithographs, one of which has all the proofs signed.
In this illustrated edition of The Stranger, Mireille Berrard accompanies Camus's text with original lithographs that extend the novel's stark and tense atmosphere. Her images, with their clean, contrasting lines, highlight Meursault's solitude, his mechanical gestures, and the oppressive light that structures the narrative. The compositions often play on shadows and empty spaces, reflecting the protagonist's detachment from the world and the absurdity that pervades the events. Berrard's art does not seek to interpret the text, but rather to accentuate its visual resonance, emphasizing key moments: the beach, the murder, the trial, and the moments of introspection. This encounter between Camus's writing and the artist's graphic work offers a sensitive reading, where the image becomes a silent extension of the existential reflection conveyed by the novel.
Folio (27 x 35 cm), loose sheets in a folder and slipcase, 197 pages plus justification of the edition. The text was hand-set and printed on the presses of the M. Jacquet printing house. Sixteen original color lithographs by Mireille Berrard, including three double-page and thirteen full-page plates, in addition to two color suites of the lithographs, one of which contains all the proofs signed. Limited edition of 350 copies on Rives wove paper. Slipcase rubbed, with foxing, spine sunned, top and bottom edges of the folder sunned. Interior preserved.
