Description from the seller
Gulliver’s Travels into Several Remote Regions of the World by Dean Swift
With explanatory notes and a biography of the author by John Francis Waller, LL.D.
Illustrated by T. Morten
London, Paris & New York: Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co., [circa 1878–1879].
Dating of this edition
The publication can be accurately placed in 1878–1879, based on:
The publisher's name Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co., which was used between 1865 and 1879.
From the end of 1879, the company name changed to Cassell & Company, Limited. This edition therefore precedes that change.
The publisher's catalog at the back of the book lists works up to a maximum of 1878/1879, including Familiar Wild Flowers (1878) by F. E. Hulme.
This confirms a publication date just before the publisher's reorganization.
Physical description
Original decorative publisher's binding in reddish-brown linen, richly decorated with black and gold stamping: a large image of Gulliver with the Lilliputs on the front cover.
Rug with gold embossing and black decoration.
Gold on all edges (all edges gilt, AEG) — a sought-after feature among collectors.
Richly illustrated with full-page plates and in-text illustrations by T. Morten (published posthumously, as Morten died in 1869).
Condition
Band in reasonably good condition, minor wear on the corners and sides of the strap.
At the front, light foxing and spots, otherwise sporadic; typical for its age.
Beautifully shiny and bright gold chain.
