Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) was an Italian painter and sculptor, and one of the most famous representatives of Expressionism. His works are easily recognizable thanks to his characteristic style, which includes elongated proportions, almond-shaped eyes, and a distinctive way of depicting the human figure. After studying in his homeland, he moved to Paris in 1906, where he immersed himself in the Bohemian life of Montmartre and met many famous artists. In Paris, he became acquainted with artists like Pablo Picasso and Diego Rivera. During this time, Modigliani also met the Russian poet Anna Akhmatova, who became one of his muses. His style was influenced by African masks and Cycladic idols, which he studied in museums. This led to his signature look: elongated faces and forms, expressive lines, and a slightly melancholic appearance. Often, Modigliani's portraits feature eyes that are empty or without pupils. The artist explained this by saying he could not yet recognize the soul of the depicted person. His only lifelong exhibition was closed in 1917 by the police due to public outrage over its 'obscene' nude images. After his death, interest in Modigliani's work grew rapidly, and the value of his paintings reached record heights.
