Victor Vasarely (1906–1997) was a Hungarian–French artist widely regarded as the father of Op Art, the artistic movement that explores visual perception through optical effects. Trained in Budapest at the Mühely, often called the Hungarian Bauhaus, Vasarely combined influences from Constructivism, Gestalt theory, and geometric abstraction to develop a new visual language based on precise forms, vibrant color contrasts, and mathematically organized patterns.
In the 1950s and 1960s, he pioneered artworks that produced illusions of movement, depth, and vibration, positioning him as one of the most innovative figures of post-war art. His 'kinetic' compositions, built from repeated geometric units ('unités plastiques'), became foundational to Op Art and inspired generations of designers, architects, and visual artists. Works such as Zebra, Vonal, and the Vega series demonstrate his mastery in creating dynamic, pulsating surfaces that seem to expand, contract, or bend before the viewer's eyes.
Vasarely’s market has remained strong and international. His major works, especially early pieces from the 1950s-60s and paintings from the Vega period, are highly sought after at auction, often reaching €50,000 to over €300,000.
Victor Vasarely’s legacy lies not only in his instantly recognizable geometric style but also in his redefinition of visual perception, bridging art, science, and technology, and establishing the conceptual foundation for Op Art as a major 20th-century movement.
