Bartolomé Esteban Murillo was one of the most prominent painters of the Spanish Baroque period. Born in Seville, he became known for his soft, luminous style and deeply spiritual themes. His work is characterized by delicate brushwork, warm color palettes, and emotive, idealized figures, often focused on religious subjects, genre scenes, and the Virgin Mary.

Murillo's compositions were designed to inspire devotion, and his treatment of light and fabric gives his figures a soft, almost divine aura. His works became widely admired not only in Spain but across Europe, influencing generations of religious painters.

Among Murillo’s most celebrated masterpieces is "The Immaculate Conception," painted around 1665. The painting, shown above, captures the Virgin Mary as a young, ethereal figure ascending in divine radiance. She is draped in flowing white and blue robes, standing on a crescent moon—a reference to the Apocalyptic Woman in the Book of Revelation. The composition is framed by floating cherubs and a glowing, golden sky.

Murillo painted several versions of the Immaculate Conception, but this one, often cited as the most iconic, embodies his ideal of divine purity and grace. It is admired for its delicate tonal harmony, smooth modeling, and serene emotional expression.

Today, Murillo's works are highly valued in the art market and museum collections worldwide. While many remain in public institutions, others have fetched significant prices at international auctions.
