Description from the seller

Beautiful figurative scene by Eugène Broerman depicting a young Breton woman in front of a stone fountain, set in a melancholic atmosphere. The palette dominated by mineral greens and blues is typical of a late 19th-century symbolist painting. A sensitive, evocative work filled with atmosphere.
Dimensions without frame: 51x63 cm. Excellent condition.

Eugène Broerman was born in Brussels on July 12, 1861, and died in Saint-Gilles on October 7, 1932. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Brussels starting in 1873, in the workshop of Jean‑François Portaels, and associated with figures like James Ensor and Fernand Khnopff. Winner of the Godecharle Prize in 1881 (the first laureate), which allowed him to travel to Italy and Provence. Versatile, he produced portraits, genre scenes, marine paintings, and landscapes, and created monumental decorations – notably for the Saint-Gilles Town Hall, Brussels. His works are held in collections including the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Brussels and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
